Estani added a comment to GTWY-2301 to describe two variable issues he had recently. This ticket is in response to the second part of his comment concerning the "ec550aer" variable. Pasted below is my response comment on that ticket and the issue that needs investigation here:

If you look at the view dataset page for this dataset, the "Ambient Aerosol Extinction at 550 nm" variable is listed under the dataset tab, without a standard name. I then looked at the THREDDS file (http://vesg.ipsl.fr/thredds/esgcet/1/cmip5.output1.IPSL.IPSL-CM5A-LR.aqua4K.mon.aerosol.aero.r1i1p1.v20110429.xml?dataset=cmip5.output1.IPSL.IPSL-CM5A-LR.aqua4K.mon.aerosol.aero.r1i1p1.v20110429.ec550aer_aero_IPSL-CM5A-LR_aqua4K_r1i1p1_197901-198511.nc) and saw that there is indeed the "ec550aer" variable listed with a vocabulary of "CF-1.0". The THREDDS harvesting of variables relies on the mapping of the vocabulary value to a StandardNameType. Essentially this is a string comparison. StandardNameType has the values: CF, GCMD, CCSM
"CF-1.0" doesn't equate to any of those but contains "CF" so ec550aer should be added as a standard name and was not. This needs to be remedied before that variable will have a standard name that will show up in the variable facet.
